Save the date for the 6th Annual Cultural Extravaganza at Southside Cultural Center! We are partnering with Rhode Island Latino Arts and Rhode Island Black Storytellers (RIBS) to bring you an afternoon of cultural celebrations, performances, and family friendly fun.

Introduction to Flamenco Dance Series
Over the ten weeks, the beginner flamenco classes will provide you with the first tools to express yourself though the passionate flamenco rhythms (palos) with techniques of arms and hands movement, palmas (hand clapping), taconeo (footwork) and marcajes (marking steps). You will dive into rich cultural history and feel empowered, while also strengthening your muscles and burning calories. No flamenco shoes required.
Classes are cap at 20 participants, all ages and abilities welcomed.
Please bring your own water bottles and wear comfortable flat soled sneakers (such as Converses or Adidas Superstar).

5th Annual African Film and Art Festival
The 5th Annual African Film and Art Festival presented by Providence World Music comes to Southside Cultural Center this Saturday September 21! Free movies, music, and dance!
We will have live music outdoors featuring distinct musical traditions from Africa and African Diaspora. Classic Vibe Reggae will perform at 3:30 PM to celebrate reggae music. We have invited Burundian singer and band leader Africa Nova to join us to celebrate the local African community by honoring the music of the people of Burundi from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
We will screen three films indoor and outdoor from 3:00 PM to 7:15 PM. We will begin at 3:00 PM with a screening of Lucky (by Kumi Kumi Obuoabisa, Ghana), followed by The River by Ethiopian filmmaker Herrana Addisu at 5:00 PM and The Bride by Rwandese filmmaker and visual artist Myriam Uwiragiye Birara at 7:15 PM.

3rd annual Black August Celebration
Join Southside Community Land Trust at Southside Cultural Center for our third annual Black August Celebration and free farmers market! From 11am to 2pm, experience live storytelling from Raffini, SCLT’s Youth Programs Director and a founding member of the RI Black Storytellers, to commemorate Pan-African liberation movements around the world and in our neighborhoods. The celebration will also feature musicians, spoken word artists, and performances from youth and emerging adults.

Bilingual Summer Art Camp
This Bilingual Summer Art Camp, managed by Rhode Island Latino Arts, will introduce and expand students knowledge of the fundamentals of drawing and visual thinking through the act of drawing. This class focuses on drawing as a core component of visual expression as well as expanding drawing into other media and techniques. Students will gain knowledge and experience in a variety of approaches, ranging from observational to experimental drawing so that they can have more tools to express themselves.
Requirements: Students must be ages 14-16 and have a strong interest in visual art and design.
Schedule: Tuesday-Wednesdays-Thursdays from July 9 to August 1, 2024

This year marks the 150th anniversary of his birth with the screening of Beyond the Mask: Paul Laurence Dunbar
SCCRI welcomes award winning filmmaker, Brown University graduate and Ohio University professor of film and media Fredrick Lewis for a screening and discussion of his documentary Beyond the Mask: Paul Laurence Dunbar.
